- 2
Share the words
Send the link, say the words, or let them scan the code. Everyone with them sees the same board.
- 3
Chalk up the week
Tap a day and write what's for dinner. Changes show up on everyone's phone, even ones that are off.
Made for the 6pm question
Ideas when you're stuck
It learns the meals you have and suggests favourites you haven't had for a while. Or tap “Surprise me”.
Shopping list, done
Write a meal's ingredients once. The week's shopping list builds itself, and can go straight onto your We Need Bananas list.
Who's cooking?
Put a name on each night, add a note or a recipe link, and swap days when plans change.
Same again
Copy last week into this one, or wipe the board and start fresh. Every change can be undone.
Dinner, tea or supper
Call it what you call it at home. Pick your chalk colour too.
Private by design
No accounts and no database. Boards live on your devices and sync directly, encrypted.
Questions
How do I share a dinner plan with my household without making an account?
Tap "Start a board" and you get a board named with three random words, like lemon.fork.bulb. Send those words (or the link dinners.thomaschaplin.me/lemon.fork.bulb) to the people you live with. Whoever opens it sees the same board and can chalk up dinners too. There is no signup, email, password or app to install.
Why use Dinners instead of a calendar or notes app?
It is built for the "what’s for dinner?" question. Each day of the week is a square on a chalkboard. It learns the meals you have, suggests favourites you haven’t had for a while (or picks one with "Surprise me"), remembers each meal’s recipe link and ingredients for next time, and turns the week into a shopping list. You can note who’s cooking, swap days, copy last week, and wipe the board for a fresh start.
Can it make a shopping list from the week’s meals?
Yes. Write the ingredients a meal needs once and they are remembered with it. "Shopping list" gathers the ingredients for the rest of the week, once each, ready to copy or send. If you use We Need Bananas, the free shared shopping list, link your list and the ingredients go straight onto it.
Where is our board stored?
On your own devices. Every phone or computer that opens the board keeps a full copy in the browser, and copies sync directly between devices over an encrypted peer-to-peer connection (WebRTC). So that a phone opening the board later still gets your changes, an encrypted copy also waits on a few public Nostr relays, which cannot read it and delete it 30 days after the board was last used. There is no database and no server of our own that stores boards.
Do we both need it open at the same time?
No. Chalk up the week, put your phone down, and whoever opens the board next gets it. Changes made offline merge automatically, and if two people are looking at the same time they see each other’s changes live.
Is our board private?
Board pages are never indexed by search engines. The words are turned into secret keys on your device and never leave it, and the copy left on public relays is encrypted with a key only the words can produce. Anyone who knows the three words can open the board, so share them only with people you eat with. If they get out, "Move to new words" in the settings moves everything to a fresh board and leaves the old words empty.
Can we call it tea or supper?
Of course. In settings, choose dinner, tea or supper and the whole board uses your word.
How much does it cost?
Nothing. There are no ads, no accounts and no tracking of what you eat.
